If I had to recommend one used car to someone who valued reliability above almost everything else, the 2022 Toyota Camry would be difficult to displace. Consumer Reports currently rates the 2022 Camry as more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year.

2. 2022 Toyota Corolla — Best Compact Car
A 2022 Corolla is new enough to offer modern safety and convenience equipment while avoiding the uncertainty of buying the first year of Toyota’s latest redesign. The combination of manageable purchase price, excellent fuel economy, widespread parts and service availability, and a mechanical foundation designed for ordinary transportation rather than complexity.
That doesn’t mean every used Corolla deserves your money. Ex-rental cars and heavily used commuter examples are common, so condition and maintenance still matter.

3. 2022 Toyota RAV4 — Best Compact SUV
The 2022 RAV4 combines strong reliability evidence with relatively conservative engineering. 5. 2022 Toyota Highlander V6 — Best Family SUV
I prefer the 2022 Highlander specifically because it combines the final year of Toyota’s naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 with the maturity of a late-production model. For 2023, Toyota replaced the V6 with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder. The newer engine isn’t automatically less reliable, but it doesn’t have the same long-term track record.
That makes the 2022 particularly attractive for families planning to keep their SUV well beyond 100,000 miles: you get one of the newest Highlanders available with a proven, long-established V6 rather than moving into a newer powertrain generation.
Its recall history still deserves attention, so check the VIN and confirm that all applicable campaigns have been completed. But for buyers prioritizing proven mechanical history without buying an unnecessarily older Highlander, 2022 is the sweet spot I’d target.

Battery condition still deserves attention because reliability and battery health aren’t quite the same thing. Hybrid batteries can last a long time, but age, mileage, climate, and usage all influence their condition.
In 2026, a 2021 Prius is still young enough that battery age shouldn’t be a major deterrent. For higher-mileage examples, however, a proper battery-health check remains worthwhile before purchase.

There have nevertheless been recalls, including the Toyota/Lexus occupant-classification sensor campaign. Again, reliable doesn’t mean recall-free. With a used RX you’re getting a luxury vehicle for substantially less than its original price, but routine Lexus service, and spare parts can cost more than a normal Toyota.

9. 2021 Toyota Tacoma — Best Used Pickup for Reliability

The bigger issue is often price. Tacomas hold their value exceptionally well, which can make used examples difficult to justify against newer alternatives. 10. 2020 Honda Fit — Best Budget Used Car

The catch is age. A 2020 Fit is now six years old, so condition increasingly matters. Why the Honda CR-V Isn’t Automatically Our Compact-SUV Winner
Leaving the CR-V off a reliability list would be misleading; it’s generally one of the stronger used compact SUVs. But this article isn’t supposed to be a roll call of brands with good reputations.
The 2021 CR-V, for example, currently performs well in Consumer Reports’ reliability data, but its recall history includes major campaigns involving the fuel pump and occupant-classification sensor, among others.
